The Boreal Valley
The Boreal Valley is a group of five abstract images each of which began as a low-resolution screenshot of a dark and violent environment found in a notoriously brutal dystopian video game. Inspired to draw forth something positive from the original images, I digitally manipulated these images until they were transformed into brighter ethereal abstractions. By creating novel abstract images from grotesque digital environments, the work opens a dialogue about the powerful effects of digital technologies on our lives and on the transformative potential of abstract art.
Because this work explores our relationships with digital and physical worlds, I bring the project to life in both digital and physical mediums. All images in this series are available as minted NFTs and in their final forms as hand-painted canvases.

Process
Step 1: Sourcing
I downloaded screenshots of a creepy level in a game called Dark Souls.
Step 2: Manipulating
I randomly altered the images’ source code, causing glitches in the image file. Then in Photoshop I manipulated the glitched images by duplicating, transforming, and applying filters to multiple layers.
Step 3: Digital Painting
I tweaked the colors, created a layer mask and “painted“ in the areas of the composition I wanted to keep. When satisfied with each image, I minted each as a 12”x18” NFT.
Step 4: Physical Painting
I projected the digital sketch onto a large 48"x72" canvas and painted it by hand with a small detailing brush and fluorescent acrylic paints.
